I know that being on the cart paths during this heat is tough but instead of me telling you why we are cart paths only I will show you. All of this damage was from yesterday and today is going to be hotter. All of the damage is from golf carts. Not only are Golfers cart paths only but my crew is as well all day for the next two days. Thank you for your understanding.

This week we will have very high temperatures the entire week and may last into next week. For this reason, we will be changing our mowing practices so that we do not stress the turf too much. We will be implementing rolling instead of cutting on certain days. Cutting is very stressful on the greens so we will be doing less of it, greens will be slower. We will also be syringing greens every hour or so. Please remember that if the flagstick is off the putting green or if an employee is on the putting green not to hit into them.
Yesterday, we vented all the greens with slicers and 1/4 inch solid tines. This is to help the greens release some of the moisture that is held up in our clay soils. This was followed by a topdressing that was broomed into the turf canopy. The sand helps change the soil structure to a more desirable one as well as smooth and firm the playing surface.
Today, because of the sand on the greens, We only double rolled the greens. This was done to try to save the bed knives on the mowers. Tomorrow for the member guest we will be single cutting and double rolling the greens to get some speed out of th We received almost an inch of rain last night, we will be cart paths only. We have moved all of the tees forward to help speed up play. Bunkers are a mess and will take some time to repair and may not be finished today. Everything is soaked.
Now for some interesting turf technical stuff. This was the highest moisture meter reading we ever took, 50 this morning. With 86 degrees on the way this would make me worry but at the same time the soil temperatures are at 70 degrees. Today soil temperature will be the deciding factor for syringing greens. If the soil temps get too high we would have to add water to cool them down. High soil and surface temps will boil the plant crown and the greens would begin to decline. Never a dull moment in the turf business. It has been a very wet 7 days. So far we are almost at 5 inches and counting. It looks like we will be in a rainy pattern of weather for another ten days. Getting everything cut on the course is a challenge at times but we are doing our best to keep up. Please be patient. Thank you. Wet conditions are also prime tine for dieases to start on the course. We are going to try spraying when the weather allows us too. We have seen very minimal damage from dollar spot this year and we want to keep it that way. It is very important that ball marks are fixed on the greens now that they are soft. Please remeber to twist from the outside into the center of the ball mark. Lifting up will cause shearing of the roots and create a dead spot on the green in a few days. Thanks again. This is a picture of dollar spot on bentgrass. |
