Now that the Maddock is over we will be giving the hardest workers at Glen Oak a break....the greens and fairways. We are heading into a hot stretch this week so we will be raising the height of cut on the greens as well as alternate cutting and rolling greens. This will allow them to be less stressed throughout the day. We will be getting back to our normal maintenance procedures as soon as the temperatures break. We will be out there all week hand syringing greens to keep them cool during these hot temperatures as well. So please watch out for us and remember that if the flag is not on the green do not hit to it. We will be very quick with our cool down. We are not trying to slow your game, we are protecting you asset.
What a great weekend! Congratulations to Ken and Tom for their win last night. The course held up well and took everything that we through at it. Sunday the greens were rolling close to a 13 and were rolling true. Justin came up with some great pin positions all weekend as well.

Congratulations to all the winners in the summer championship this past weekend. Sunday was a beautiful day for golf. I hope everyone had a great time. Today we are going to get drenched with rain. We plan on slicing greens to allow for some gas exchange in to the greens subsurface, minimal impact to play. We will also be installing a drain at the turn on #7. This area is always wet so we will be taking care of this problem today. Once again, minimal to no impact to play. If you are interested in the behind the scenes of the U.S. Open then you might want to follow me on Twitter. I will be re-tweeting all the videos and pictures from my colleagues that are volunteering at Merion. If I would have known that our weather was going to be like this I would have committed to work at Merion this year. Story of a superintendents life, dependent on weather. This is a picture of our granular fairway fertilizer application. This was started Monday after the outing and completed before dark. These particles will be incorperated with the thatch layer on fairways and slowly be released throughout the growing season. This is along with our biweekly foliar fertilizer application. This will help the fairways stay healthy and fight dieases. We are preparing for this weekends event. In preparation we verticut fairways last Sunday and Monday. We also started double cutting greens on Tuesday morning to get our speeds back up. I hope that the weather predicted, .9 inches, for Thursday and Friday will stay away so that the course will firm up as well. Green speeds that we are looking for for the weekend are 12+ but if we get the rain predicted then they may only be 11 to 11.5 or less. The current weather pattern we are in is giving us cool dry days and even cooler nights. This is perfect for tournament prep at Glen Oak. We have also been cutting the rough 7 days a week for 10 hours on the weekend and 12 to 15 hours on weekdays. It is cut at 2.5 inches which is the same height that we have always cut the rough at. It is very thick right now. Usually this time of year it is 80 to 85 degrees and the rough starts to turn dormant and thin out. This year has been like an extended spring and the rough is taking full advantage of the weather. We will continue to battle the rough 7 days a week until it slows down. There were a few questions about green speeds yesterday. The greens were not as fast as they normally are because of the rain that was recived. Also with predicted temperatures of 85+ for four straight days I decided to be safe and not push the greens under stressful conditions. All that being said the green were still a 10 for speed. This with very saturated soil an thick humidity. I would rather be safe than sorry. Now that the weather is just about past us we will be ramping up conditions for the summer championship next weekend. Then we will back off for a week and the speed everything back up for the Maddock in 3 weeks. I hope this gives a better explanation of the conditions out there. Thanks again. |
